Google has put YouTube to the disposal of Japanese people who are trying to find their missing friends and relatives. Videos of people missing in the disaster were put up on YouTube. These short videos, less than a minute long, were taken at the various shelters.
The YouTube 'Person Finder' tool was tweaked to make 'YouTube Missing Person Finder' tool which is being used to find missing Japanese people. More than 330,000 records were entered in the YouTube 'Missing Person Finder'.
Google official said that a large number of Google employees were spending one-fifth of their time creating tools that could help the Japanese people. Google has created various multi-lingual pages offering useful information related to relief operations and is also posting lists of shelters on its photo-sharing site Picasa.

Streaming Online TV Seen as Threat By Major Networks

Many consumers are turning to streaming online TV services like Hulu as a way to watch their favorite shows, and this is creating a threat to the major TV networks as the new technology begins to muscle in on their business. Hulu, for instance, was launched in 2007 as an experiment by the TV networks into web distribution that would offer an alternative to piracy.

As it's popularity quickly grew, Hulu and similar services actually began to cannibalise the traditional and lucrative cable/satellite distribution model. The situation recently became critical for the networks as the number of households paying for TV dropped for the first time ever last year. Now the CEO of Hulu, who was appointed by the networks, finds himself in a war of sorts with his employers and has threatened to leave the company when his contract expires if his proposals for the future of the company are blocked.

Watching TV on your notebook

If you're wondering how you can watch your favorite video channels on your laptop or computer, you should know that there are currently two possible ways. The first option is buying and using a TV tuner. Such a device enables TV signal reception and even allows your computer to capture your favorite programs. More than that, besides the TV stations you will be able to listen to many radio stations. Today the best selling devices are the digital TV tuners which offer a stronger signal and HD (High Definition) quality image.
Another way to view live TV on your notebook or computer is online watching on websites which offer free access or a monthly subscription that gives access to a large number of stations around the world. This method does not require a TV tuner but it needs however a very fast internet connection in order to work optimally.
If you do not wish to watch live TV but only your favorite shows, you might find them for free on streaming websites like YouTube or DailyMotion.
