I don't know if speed is important or not or if it depends of the case. What if I'm sure, its that speed is a great argument of marketing and helps you sell more for sure. Many users "bite" when the seller quickly explains that a wireless access point is faster than another.
That argument is just good enough! But anyone who knows how WiFi works, knows that the speed of a WiFi network is crucial when the user sets the fastest speed and good Hot Spots and you can see the smiles appearing on the faces of the whole bunch of users.
Consequently, only in certain cases we can take advantage of the higher speed, but it depends on the equipment and the technology used as well. The problem of compatibility "Forcing" a technology like 802.11n "together" with 802.11b and 802.11g means a great "sacrifice" of technical resources.
The transmission of information in wireless 802.11b and 802.11g wireless networks takes place in the 2.4 GHz band, which is heavily populated, and only has 3 non-overlapping channels with a width of 20 MHz per channel, where the information goes up and down. 802.11n is proposed to use 40 GHz channels wide.
To reconcile the two technologies, they are "degraded" to 802.11n, losing many of its advantages. In 802.11a works in the 5 GHz band, much more populated and least 8 channels to choose from, so, too many people advocates of "prevent" that 802.11n include the option of running at 2.4 GHz.
